At Dorchester Martial Arts all new members start their Martial Arts journey with our fundamentals course. This course comprises of 5-15 personal training sessions with the same coach who will coach your group classes.
We’re aware that many gyms don’t take this approach so I thought I’d explain why we do things this way and why it’s better for you.
1) Its safer.
Your safety is our primary concern at the gym. We want you to enjoy your training and see great results but that won’t happen if you’re injured or afraid you might be injured. It’s madness to place an inexperienced member into a group Martial Arts class, you won’t know the techniques or be proficient in the movements and our coaches won’t know your training history or if you have any mobility issues.
2) You’re confident and knowledgeable.
When you first start training with us you’ll be taught new skills involving different training equipment, this isn’t overwhelming as you’re taught in a 121 class. The coaches can take as long as needed to make you confident and you have all the time in the world to ask questions and recap things. This ensures by the time you join our group class you feel prepared to hit the ground running and don’t feel like a fish out of water.
3) Its bespoke.
The fundamental course is designed to be flexible and is based on your individual needs, some members join with lots of experience and a good base level of fitness, others have never been inside a gym before. It makes sense that different members will need different amounts of training to make them competent (and confident) to join a group class.
4) You’ll know your coach.
Your fundamental course will be coached by the same person who will lead your group class, this is hugely important and often overlooked by many other gyms. By the time you join the group class your coach will know your training history, know how you move, know what areas need more work and the best way to coach and motivate you. You’ll be familiar with his/her coaching style and already have a great relationship
5) You’ll stay.
You’ve already invested time and money to get to the group class, you feel comfortable working in the gym with your coach, you’re competent with all the movements and understand why you’re doing them, you’re recording your results and are making fantastic progress in and out of the gym… why would you leave?
6) The alternative.
Now you’ve read the above points let’s look at the usual way of joining a group martial arts class. You turn up for your first free trial session, it’s a new environment and you don’t know the coach or anyone else. The movements you’re asked to do are complicated and your training partner is constantly having to explain things to you which ruins his session. You get limited exposure to the coach as he is also coaching 15 other people and you don’t really understand why you’re doing those movements or the theory behind them.
It’s a bad model, it’s bad for you and its bad for us as we can’t effectively do the thing we love which is to coach members to become better martial artists.
