6 reasons to learn Boxing with Dorchester Martial Arts.
Boxing is one of the most under appreciated yet effective combat sports today, everyone wants to learn the flashy kicks seen in the movies or the big throws and slams seen in Mixed Martial Arts but the majority of Martial Arts have some form of punching techniques and when it comes to punching Boxing is king, it’s simply miles ahead of everything else.
In this blog I’m going to run through some of the benefits of to learning to box with Dorchester Martial Arts.
- Fitness
Boxers are some of the fittest athletes around due to the nature of their training. Our classes involve a warm up such as skipping and shadow boxing, a body weight or kettlebell workout, striking on the pads and bags and partner work. This will make you stronger, improve your cardiovascular fitness, lose weight and help to relieve stress. - Self defence
In a real fight most people punch so it’s essential you learn how to defend against punches and be able to effectively strike back to defend yourself and your family. Boxing gives you the tools to do this and the confidence to fight back knowing you have ability to defend yourself. - It’s Simple (not easy)
Boxing only has six main punches so new boxers can become proficient fairly quickly, although it’s takes many years to master. When you compare this to an art such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which takes years just to learn the basics, Boxing becomes a faster way to get started, especially if your main goal is fitness. - Boxing Improves other arts
Nearly every top mixed martial arts fighter or Thai Boxer learns Boxing to improve their punching skills. Its punching techniques have been proven to be effective thousands of times in the ring and continues to be the top choice for MMA and kickboxing athletes. Most martial arts contain some form of punching techniques so adding boxing to your arsenal will make you a better martial artist. - Everyone can do it
At Dorchester Martial Arts we offer non contact classes and separate sparring based sessions, so if you plan to use boxing as a way to get fitter but don’t want to compete you don’t have to. Alternatively if your goal is to take your boxing training to the next level then we have a class for you. Also as boxing doesn’t rely on flexibility like so many other combat sports, it’s more accessible to a wider demographic. My Gran should be able to take part in a boxing class as she wouldn’t be expected to kick or fight from the floor, I wouldn’t teach her boxing though as she’s dangerous enough already! - Competition
Boxing is a fantastic sport, it’s turned around the lives of many young people and is practised all over the world. If you would like to compete then we have great links with other clubs who we can have friendly bouts with and there are many local white collar shows too where you can test your skills in front of a paying crowd.
